The physical fitness components that most people target when they first join a gym are muscular strength and to a lesser extent body fat percentage.
This can be expected because the majority of people joining gyms intend to get in shape and by losing body fat and increasing their muscle size they will be achieving their goal which is to look better.
In the process of targeting these two physical fitness components other aspects of your fitness will also improve including endurance of the cardiovascular and muscular systems and to a lesser extent flexibility if you are including some form of stretching exercises in your training.
So you can see that no matter what physical fitness components you are targeting there will also be the added benefits of the other components improving to some degree whether you intended that to happen or not.
Quite often somebody who is unfit and has never trained before will only have the ability to target one or two physical fitness components and in doing so they will find the whole level of their fitness improving relatively fast.
